Seasonal Wooden Blocks
This past week my Aunt asked me if I wanted two boxes of wooden craft blocks... of course I said YES! After searching Pinterest for some ideas I found a fellow craft blog with a great idea of using only ten blocks to create over SIXTY seasonal sayings... so this craft can stay out and on display all year long. Now that's my kind of decorating.
I got this whole idea from Sassy Sanctuary, a blog dedicated to crafts and a stylish home. She has so many great and doable ideas. The specific post that I got the seasonal blocks from is found here. She gives step by step directions and lots of pictures.
Feel free to use my Amazon suggested links below: {I am an Amazon affiliate which means if you purchase anything from my lists, I will get a tiny portion back. I only include things I personally have purchased and love!!!}
Supplies:
I started out with ten blank wooden blocks...
...and painted them white (surprise, surprise!). It took me about two coats.
Here is the chalk paint I used. I found it at Wal-Mart for around $5.00. I thought this would be the perfect craft to try it out on. They had several other colors and finishes to choose from.
After painting I sanded the edges to give them more of a distressed look.
Then I used some stickers to put on the faces of the blocks. I used two packs of these.
Here are the letters you need for each block.
Block 1: H Y E D A N Block 2: A C R S N I Block 3: R P E T U N Block 4: V N L O A S Block 5: E O M D S R Block 6: S M K I A O Block 7: T F B W Y E Block 8: U A G L Y T Block 9: P J I H O W Block 10: F P S C U E
Then you arrange the blocks on a shelf to read a variety of sayings.... like...
Can you believe that by using these ten blocks and the different letters listed above you can spell out about SIXTY different words such as:
Birthday Flake Hearts Christ Jesus Bloom Flag Irish Sun Sunny Swim Pool Ghost(s) Witch(es) Peace Bunny Be Mine Vampire Fright Thanks Fairies Jolly Flowers Wishes Leaf Treats Turkey Party Heart Smile Wonder Dance Thankful It’s a boy Harvest Welcome Faith Family Spooky Friends Winter Freedom Blessed Fall Happy Merry Joy Grace Rainy Country It’s a girl Fairy Snow Home Hope Monster Mother Dream Easter Lucky Lucky You Love Love You Santa Garden Let it Snow Imagine Halloween Glory Romance Pumpkin Frosty School Autumn Spring Spring Time Summer Father America Brrr Believe Christmas Snowflake New Year Give Thanks Kitchen
The original poster said she made these blocks as Mother's day gifts for her mother and mother-in-law and I LOVE that idea. I think these would also be great as new neighbor or a house warming gift. I like the idea of being able to keep these out all year long and adjusting them based on the season or mood. I'm sure there are a lot more words that can be made that aren't even listed!
I considered just buying a large set of alphabet blocks and a pad of ink to do this. I still think that would look good, it would be just as easy and you could reuse the stamps for another craft. Mod-Podging (is that a word?) scrapbook paper would also add some variation if you're interested in more color or prints.
Would you make these for yourself or as a gift for someone?
